How Often Should I Have My Drains Cleaned

February 12th 2021

Established in 1968, NCT Plumbing is a professional plumbing company serving Fort Worth, Texas, and the surrounding area. As part of our services is drain cleaning maintenance, which includes sewer, shower, toilets, and bathtubs that are backed up.

When it comes to drain cleaning, there is conflicting information as to how often it should be done, but as experts in the business, we recommend that your drains should be cleaned once a month to prevent major plumbing issues.

Cleaning your drains once a month rather than making it a weekly task allows you to plan time so that you can use safe drain cleaning methods that are better for the environment and your drains.

Baking soda and vinegar

Safe methods such as baking soda, vinegar, and boiling water are simple yet effective in ensuring your drains will work properly without requiring any major work done to them. To clean, combine 1 cup of vinegar and boiling water with a half cup of baking soda, mix, and then pour down the drain.  Use the drain plug to cover the sink and allow the mixture to settle between 5 and 10 minutes before flushing the drain with another cup of hot water.

Baking soda and vinegar are effective in loosening up anything that is clogging or causing blockages to the drain and will loosen any debris that will then easily wash down the drain.

Plumbing snake

Another effective way for drain cleaning is using a plumbing snake, which is a long, flexible wire used that loosens clogs in the drain. The snake gets pushed into the drain until the blockage is reached, and then turns in circles to loosen up toe blockage or hook onto to pull it out.

Snakes can fit as an attachment on an electric drill, which gives it additional power to go through the clog and is handy because they are long enough to reach particularly deep clubs.

Prevention is key

Trying to prevent drain blockage in the first place is key, although that can sometimes prove to be difficult.

However, some measures can be taken, including doing a hot water flush once a week, using a plugged strainer in the kitchen to catch loose food particles, and, in the bathroom, using drain catchers in the bathtub to catch hair and not flushing any hair down the toilet.
